Meet Our Dedicated Board of Directors

Barb Riordan
President
Barb grew up in Southwestern Ontario and graduated from the University of Guelph with a degree in Biology. She worked as a biologist with the Ministry of Natural Resources in Timmins, Ontario and then as an Environmental Superintendent at Endako Mine in the central interior of BC. Having had her fill of Arctic-like winters and non-existent summers, she moved with her husband to Parksville in 2012 where she was immediately “pressed” into service with MVIHES. Barb can now be found wading through creeks in leaking waders or being entangled in seine nets, and loving every minute of it.

Maggie Estok
Vice President
Maggie grew up beside Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy, fostering a lifelong fascination with marine habitats. While her academic path led to a Master’s in English from NYU and a career in language and communications, her first visit to Vancouver Island sparked a deep connection to its natural beauty. Since taking her first dip in Englishman River three decades ago, Maggie’s interest in the Island’s rocks, trees, and fish has grown into a commitment to protect this environment. Through MVIHES, she translates her passion for conservation into meaningful action, giving back to the ecosystems that bring her and her family endless joy.

Shirley Hine
Treasurer
Originally from Manitoba, Shirley has called Parksville home for many years. Her 30-year career in administration with the City of Parksville earned her accolades from organizations such as the Province of BC and the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. Passionate about environmental stewardship, Shirley joined MVIHES as Treasurer in 2009 after finding retirement a bit too slow-paced. Her dedication to conservation extends to active involvement in multiple local organizations, where she continues to apply her professional expertise and love for her community to make a lasting impact.

Shelley Goertzen
Secretary
Shelley moved to Vancouver Island in 2015, trading city life for the natural beauty of “Paradise Island.” With two decades of administrative experience in non-profits, Shelley was eager to shift her focus to hands-on fieldwork and environmental conservation. Her curiosity about nature and passion for preserving ecosystems have led her to MVIHES, where she balances her involvement in habitat restoration projects with her role on the Board. Shelley is thrilled to support MVIHES’s mission and looks forward to contributing to the health of Vancouver Island’s environment.

Dick Dobler
Director
Dick grew up exploring the outdoors in Parksville, fishing in the Englishman River and playing sports throughout the 1950s and 60s. After graduating from Qualicum High and attending Malaspina College, he spent his career in land surveying and road construction across Vancouver Island, Whistler, and Haida Gwaii. Now retired, Dick has returned to his roots, dedicating his time and energy to preserving and restoring local habitats. His passion for the Englishman River and its ecosystem drives his hands-on commitment to MVIHES’s conservation efforts.

Christopher Smith
Director
Christopher opened Glaskrafter Art Glass in Nanaimo in 1977 and has since become a prominent figure in Vancouver Island’s arts scene. Inspired by years of walking the Englishman River with his partner and dogs, Christopher’s glasswork often reflects the beauty of the river and its salmon. His kiln-cast glass salmon are featured in galleries from Tofino to Whistler. Committed to giving back to the environment that has inspired his art, Christopher is proud to support MVIHES’s mission to restore and protect salmon habitats through education, fieldwork, and conservation.

Pat Ashton
Director
Born in Victoria, BC, Pat’s love for the marine environment began with childhood beach days inspired by scuba-diving parents. After raising a family in Fort Nelson and completing studies at Northern Lights and North Island College, Pat returned to Vancouver Island to pursue nursing. Her 25-year career at Victoria General Hospital combined with her passion for nature now fuels her involvement with MVIHES. In retirement, Pat enjoys observing local ecosystems and actively contributes to conservation efforts, bringing a wealth of experience and dedication to the team.

Terry Baum
Director
Terry moved from Ontario to Vancouver Island in 1981, where his career as a machinist and hydraulic technician took him across the Island. A dedicated volunteer, Terry has supported causes like family counseling, Arrowsmith Search and Rescue, and cancer research, even organizing fundraising climbs to Mt. McKinley.
